1. Size and Geographical Location


The Kelimutu National Park is geographically located between 8 ° 43 '21 "- 8 ° 48' 24" South Latitude and 121 ° 44 '21 "- 121 ° 50' 15" East Longitude. This conservation area is administratively located in three subdistrict administrative areas, namely Detsuko District, Wolowaru District, and Ndona District, Ende Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia.

The area of ​​Kelimutu National Park itself is around 5,356.5 hectares divided into various zonations for the benefit of managing the national park area. The designation of this area is based on Minister of Forestry Decree No. 679 / Kpts-II / 1997 on October 10, 1997. With an area that is quite narrow for the size of the national park makes Kelimutu National Park as the smallest national park in the Bali-Nusa Tenggara region.

2. Climate and Topography

Climate and Topography in Kelimutu National Park describe the climate of Flores Island in general. The climate in the Kelimutu National Park area is classified as type B climate with a Q value of 22.2% and average rainfall between 1,000 - 1,500 mm / year.

The rainy season occurs between January and April. Between July and August the minimum temperature can reach 21.6 ° C with average temperatures in the region ranging from 25.5 ° - 31 ° C.

The topography of the Kelimutu National Park area varies from bumpy, steep slopes to steep slopes. In this area there are several mountains, including Mount Kelibara (1,731 m asl) and Mount Kelimutu (1,690 m asl).

On Mount Kelimutu there is Lake Kelimutu which consists of three lakes known as the Three Color Lake. The water from this lake always changes every year, from red to dark green then red heart, dark green to light green, and from blackish brown to sky blue. Lake Kelimutu itself is one of the 9 wonders of the world.

3. Regional History

The history of the Kelimutu National Park area noted that there were two important times that became a milestone in the management of conservation efforts in this area.

On October 4, 1984 based on Minister of Forestry Decree No. 185 / Kpts-II / 1984 this area was designated as Kelimutu Lake Nature Reserve which has an area of ​​only 16 ha and Lake Kelimutu Tourism Park with a wider area of ​​4,984 ha.

The establishment of the Kelimutu National Park has just been realized on February 26, 1992 based on Minister of Forestry Decree No. 279 / Kpts-II / 1992, the content of which is the change in the status of the area which was a nature reserve and a tourist park to become the 5,000-ha Kelimutu National Park.

4. Biodiversity and Ecosystems

This national park has a forest arboretum which represents a collection of flora diversity in the national park area. The area of ​​this arboretum is 4.5 ha and has 78 species of trees belonging to 36 tribes.
