Modified jumbo jets take off from Mojave Air and Space Port in the desert north of Los Angeles and glide just outside the Channel Islands, where the rocket release takes place.

The rocket should have fallen for a few seconds before the first step of the two stages was ignited and pushed it ashore towards the South Pole to load the displayed charge into low Earth orbit.

The Virgin Orbit flight aims to collect data at each step of the launch process rather than using orbiting satellites.

In a statement, NASA said the three commercial partners would improve the landing concept in the months to February 2021. The agency would evaluate which contractors would carry out the initial demonstration mission, and from that mission, NASA would determine the final lunar landers.

The Washington Post reported that both NASA and the White House still had to convince Congress to fund the program, which was projected to cost 35 billion dollars by 2024.

Rupani proposed the name and explained the motivation behind the name in the NASA essay contest  "Name the Rover. " The contest asked participants to name the helicopter and explorer Mars which will be combined when departed for the Red Planet, possibly later this year.

Last March, NASA chose the name  "Perseverance " For Mars Explorers, based on essays by students from Virginia. They returned to the essays that came in to also choose a name for the helicopter.

Rupani explained, he proposed Ingenuity because the name highlights the ability of humans to  "Do cool things like sending robots to other planets and doing science on Mars. " NASA agreed, and phoned him this week, notifying the news.
